Leyton Orient 2-0 Wycombe – A match report by JasonDerulo

May 3rd, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »

We got away with it today, big time, but I suppose it’s the result that counts and it’s kept us in the division. We had the better of the game early on, as surprisingly Wycombe didn’t launch themselves at us from the outset despite needing to win. We couldn’t get a goal for our efforts, however, and at times were very sloppy. Again (pointless mentioning it as it’s almost a given with us), we had no width and when the likes of Thornton tried to make things happen he was short of options to pass to, more often than not. Our main attacking outlet was Jarvis, who held the ball up well in difficult conditions.

Wycombe were always going to come back into it, however, as they needed the points arguably more than us. In the second half Slade must have told the players to sit deeper or we just totally shat ourselves and let Wycombe dominate the game. It was horrible to watch as their centre-backs were allowed to take the ball a good 30 yards forward and their players were allowed the freedom of Brisbane Road to pick out a pass. They peppered crosses into our box, mainly from their right side through Gareth Ainsworth, who I thought was quality and at least justified his statement that they would win with his performance. Our defence, however, particularly Tam who stuck his head on everything that came his way, dealt with the relentless pressure superbly, although I do have to say if Wycombe had a centre-forward who could finish they would have been out of sight and Slade wouldn’t have got away with his tactics.

With Wycombe piling men forward, however, they were always going to be vulnerable on the break. If we had any blistering pace up front we could have severely troubled their static centre-back pairing of Lewis Hunt and Chris Westwood, but we had to make do with waiting until the 78th minute when good interplay between McGleish and Jarvis ended with the latter finishing uncharacteristically confidently. I was so pleased for Jarvis because he takes so much unnecessary abuse from a load of absolute cretins around me and continued to do so today, despite the fact that he wasn’t bad at all and one of our best performers. Wycombe then took a defender off for a striker and continued to press us. I was convinced we’d blow it but we managed to catch them on the break again after some superb work from Daniels culminating in an easy finish for McGleish.

Fair play to Wycombe who gave it a good go today and in my opinion deserved to win the game, and would have done so if they had a striker who could shoot. On that performance, they should be up there challenging in League Two next season if they keep most of their squad. Their fans were also a great bunch who were gracious in defeat.

Ratings:

Jonem – 6 – made one very good save in the second half and took a few routine catches, but put us under pressure on a couple of occasions I can think of by not coming off his line quickly enough when the ball was played through.

Lichaj – 7 – dived in too much early on and lost his footing on a slippery surface but improved second half. He’s frighteningly quick too.

Chorley – 7.5 – a couple of lapses in concentration but generally dealt very well with Wycombe’s pressure. Should have been sent off in the first half though for raising his hands to Revell’s face, luckily the referee didn’t see.

Mkandawire – 8*MOTM* – brilliant again, stuck his head on everything and Wycombe never got past him. Marshalled their strikers superbly.

Daniels – 6.5 – some good forward runs and a cracking ball for the second goal but most of Wycombe’s attacks came down his side and he has to take some responsibility for that, although it was largely down to the quality of Ainsworth.

Chambers – 5 – ran around a fair bit and got stuck in but was utterly appalling in possession.

Smith – 6 – did a decent enough defensive job.

Thornton – 6 – still don’t understand why he was taken off. Granted he wasn’t at his best today, but he was our only midfielder who looked like he might make something happen when we were going forward. Looked a tad off the pace defensively.

Spicer – 4 – as per usual looked decent on the rare occasions he broke through the middle but offered absolutely zero out wide.

Jarvis – 7 – our main attacking outlet and did a good job of holding the ball up. One cracking reverse pass to McGleish and topped his day off with a confidently taken goal.

McGleish – 5 – played Jarvis in superbly for the first goal and finished well for the second. Was utterly awful otherwise, although I accept it wasn’t entirely his fault.

SUBS:

Demetriou – 5 – produced one good cross, little else, though he was better than Spicer. Performed his usual speciality of giving the ball to the goalkeeper from corners.

Baker – 5 – apart from heading over at the back post, did nothing of note whilst on the pitch. Hopefully that will send out a message to all those who had been clamouring for his inclusion in the starting XI that he isn’t the answer to our wing problem and never has been.

Slowcrock – n/a – wasn’t on the pitch for very long.

Slade – 4 – got away with his tactics big time as a better side would have punished us, and I still find the Baker/Thornton sub bizarre. We didn’t win the game because of his subs or tactics, no matter what some might say.

Ref – 5.5 – bit meh, made some good and some bad decisions.

Millwall 2-1 Leyton Orient – A match report by PhileyO

April 25th, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »

Millwall 2-1 Leyton Orient

Orient’s unbeaten run under new manager Russell Slade came to a disappointing end at The ‘Den’.

Goals from Paul Robinson and Steve Morison were enough to seal a win for Millwall despite Ben Chorley’s late consolation.

Millwall started the brighter in a drab first half, with Chris Hackett going close with a driven effort, and the lively Danny Schofield going close with a curling effort. Millwall went even closer on 29 minutes, when Adam Chambers was inexplicably caught dallying with the ball on his own 6 yard.  Neil Harris nicked the ball but steered his shot just wide of Jonem’s right post.  With Orient lacking width the chances were always going to come through the middle or from set plays, and when the ball bounced awkwardly in the Millwall area, Ryan Jarvis stabbed a shot just over, a seemingly positive sign to take into the second half.

The Second half was not filled with free flowing football. Neither side were able to get into any sort of rhythm. Immediately after the 68th minute introduction of Leyton’s version of Cristiano Ronaldo; Jason Demetriou,  Millwall full back Scott Barron whipped in a cross which was unfortunately flicked on by Ben Chorley into the path of the unmarked Millwall captain Paul Robinson, who coolly slotted past Jonem. Questions have to be asked about the Orient marking. Orient raised their game a little bit after this, Sean Thornton attempted to break through the midfield a couple of times; however his final shots and passes lacked the required quality. On 76 Minutes, Cypriot international superstar Demetriou hit a 25 yard bouncing drive which was parried by keeper Forde. Unfortunately Demetriou’s corner was turd. Then 3 minutes later Millwall strung together the first free flowing passing move of the match, which Adam Chambers halted by running over the Millwall attacker. Steve Morrison sent keeper Jonem the wrong way with the spot kick, leaving all the Orient fans picturing how different the outcome would have been if Morrim Dogg was in goal. Patulea and Loick came on for Jarvis and McGleish respectively in the final 10 minutes.  Patulea’s work ethic as ever couldn’t be faulted, but the naivety of his link up play was clear to see.  Loick Pires was just jokes. Russell Slade’s ‘Barmy Army’ finally got something to cheer about when Ben chorley rose to head in a corner in the third minute of added time. However it was too little too late, and the Millwall fans went home to their caravans happy.

O’s 2-0 Stockport County – A match report by CheeriO

April 19th, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »
Another excellent report from CheeriO on the O’s grinding ever so slowly to safety.. and there are paragraphs involved.. but they’re not showing..!
After the O’s midweek heroics slightly more than usual Orient fans approached Brisbane Road with a spring in their step expecting to easily overcome already relegated Stockport County without our transformed heroes even having to turn up.
A return to Brisbane Road for a much loved Orient son, was on the cards as Jabo started for County and welcoming chants of Jabo greeted his name at kick off from Orient’s high spirirted support. However the team’s first half performance so predictably as we are Orient did nothing but dampen O’s spirits, a complete lack of O’s urgency created a dull and frustrating first half display, as Stockport lacked any quality whatsoever and so did Orient although their’s more came from the players can’t be arsed attitude. Returning O’s ‘favourite’ Jabo, should have lowered the Brisbane Road faithful’s high opinion of him when he used a mixture of strength and skill to take on Tam and get through one on one with Jamie Jones in the Orient goal, however as seen many times before by O’s fans Jabo failed in the one on one situation, this time to their delight as Tam tracked back to put the ball out for a corner. On a rare venture into the Stockport half, star man against Norwich, Charlie Daniels linked up well with Scotty, who returned the ball to Daniels whose stinging left foot strike brought a fine save from the Stockport keeper. A dishearting first half performance was lucky not to get the boos from the loyal Brissie support that it probably deserved.
It was clear that Mr Slade had to clearly use his famous motivational skills that were unmistakably in use to pull off the acclaimed victory in midweek and they were in use again as the O’s came out with more fighting spirit for the second half and got the goal  they did not deserve but desperately needed when Sean Thornton, clearly confident after two goals against Norwich, shot from distance when he could have played through McGleish. It proved a good decision when his shot was spilled by Owain fon Williams into the path of Jarvis who finished easily. Both the fans and players heaved a great sigh of relief and relaxed for the reamainder of the game. Stockportdid look to attack Orient’s defence and were successful when Jabo got away from Ben Chorley, however typical Jabo ballooned his effort high into the south stand, which prompted a sarcastic rendition of the old favoured chant of “JABO! JABO!”, from the south stand and chants of “same old Jabo always missing” from the west. This showed a disappointing reaction from the crowd to a former O’s favourite who always gave his all for the club. However the day wasn’t over and Eric Lichaj gave the home support more to cheer about when a forward run was finished by a wonderful strike from 25 yards into the bottom corner earning him a well deserved first career goal after a two consecutive fine performances from the American.
Well a truly uninspiring match left me with an uninspiring report to write, but it’s fair to say to Russell and the players another three points on the way to staying up and on the day job done.

Leyton Orient 2-1 Norwich City – A match report by Mike Pinner

April 14th, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »

What a game! I must say that I’ve never seen the O’s play quite as aggressively throughout an entire game. Whatever Russell Slade has done (apparently the Brighton players were so frightened of him they had to perform) is working superbly. It was clear from the start that the O’s were ‘up for it’, Thornton and Chambers in particular snapping at the heels of their midfield, and everyone in an Orient shirt fighting for every ball. This is what the fans want to see, and win lose or draw if this is what we can expect for the rest of the season I think we’ll be happy.

What was also clear is that tactically Slade got it just about right, with Smith playing in front of (and sometimes alongside) the centre halves giving them protection, whilst nullifying the threat of Johnson who looked like their best player. His booking after losing the ball was the only blemish on an otherwise outstanding performance. Playing 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 is not without it’s drawbacks, notably their left back (Drury) had acres of space because Chambers was playing infield and Jarvis who was ostensibly on the right spent a lot of time harrying their central defenders.  This is a minor quibble, however, and one that was addressed after the break.

Norwich are certainly a good team, you don’t get to their position without being one, but they were rocked on their heels by the ferocity of the Orient players commitment. Both  the O’s goals came from free kicks, how often can you say that about an area that is generally under exploited by our team? It was perhaps inevitable that Thornton was in a position to get them, he seemed to be everywhere in the early exchanges, maybe his two match ban had sharpened his appetite for the battle, or is it just that he feels he has something to prove against the ‘big’ teams? The Norwich equaliser was a well worked goal, and it would be harsh to point the finger at any of the O’s defenders. This was to be the only time they were really breached, however, because although Norwich hit the bar twice they were both speculative efforts and it would have taken a huge slice of misfortune for them to have equalised. In fact in the second half Orient had arguably the better chances, although they were under the cosh for long periods they still tried to force a third goal which would have made the game safe.

Superb performances from everybody in a red shirt, notably Daniels who on this showing could solve England’s left back problem, and who linked well with Spicer who looked more comfortable on the left. (I think this is because his natural tendency is to drift infield, which means playing on the right he is coming onto his weaker foot.)

All in all a fantastic night, and one final point about the crowd. I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much noise from the West Stand, normally it is quite embarrassing to listen to the North and South ends out sing us, but this was a night when everybody got involved and behind the team.

Leyton Orient 2-1 Norwich City – A match report by CheeriO

April 14th, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »

Hopefully the first of many reports from various fans… (who’ll remain a mystery unless they want to be identified).

Pure Inspiration.

Can be the only way to describe the immediate impact of Russell Slade on the club. The loyalest Orient fans, after witnessing the Hartlepool debacle, approached crap new (not good old) Brisbane Road wondering how many Norwich would beat us by however delirium swept the streets of East London at a quarter to ten as we wished that we’d played like that all season.

The match itself was a class display, Norwich showed glimpses of class that explained why they’re clear at the top of the league and the O’s battled outstandingly for the whole ninety minutes.

From the first real attack of the game, a Scott McGleish flick into the path of Sean Thornton left the home support in shock as he put the ball past Fraser Forster, in the Norwich goal, into the net. Despite this our team seemed shocked and unsure what to do, so they resorted to sitting deep too much and trying to hit Norwich on the break. However the inevitable happened and some brilliant Norwich passing resulted in Korey Smith finishing beautifully from twenty yards out.

The natural Orient reaction would be to lose confidence and wait for the opposition to score another but Slade seems to have brought good motivational skills into the dressing room as Orient fought back to take the lead. Shortly beforehand though I myself narrowly escaped a heart attack as Chris Martin’s looping slice of a shot crashed onto the post with a clueless and unmoved Jamie Jones rooted to the spot. After a rare venture into the Norwich City half, Leyton Orient won a free kick, a delightful Charlie Daniels ball looped over the main Orient targets and was headed in surprisingly by Sean Thornton at the far post sending the home fans into ecstasy and shutting up the again lively travelling support.

This goal seemed to renew the confidence of the O’s players and fans who got behind the team, who in turn started playing some exciting football whilst defending well at the same time. Another good ball from Charlie Daniels was flicked on by Tam and produced a good save from Forster, then some of the best passing football and movement seen from the O’s all season (yes they can do it) left Ryan Jarvis shooting wide he’d have hit the target if he didn’t bloody rely on confidence to play well. The half time whistle came and despite the very encouraging first half most Orient fans were expecting the inevitable step up from Norwich in the second half.

Orient started the second half like they had ended the first, closing down Norwich well and counter attacking well with some good attacking football, Charlie Daniels was a joy to behold as he challenged brilliantly and repeatedly bombed upfield from left back to aid the attack. Despite lots of attacking football from both sides some excellent defending from Mkandawire and Chorley and their Norwich counterparts Nelson and Doherty meant chances were limited John Spicer had a shot deflected behind for the O’s whilst Stephen Elliott fired wide for the canaries.

In the final fifteen minutes more chances fell for both sides, more good running from Daniels earned him the opportunity to shoot and Fraser Forster got down well to save, a few minutes later Forster again saved well from a strong left footed strike from McGleish at the other end Jamie Jones made a rare save when he denied Stephen Hughes. The predictable four minutes was shown on the stoppage board (it always does when we’re winning against the big teams) and Norwich pushed for the late equaliser something they have achieved in getting when needed all season. Lively substitute Anthony McNamee was denied by the inside of the post with a wayward looking shot and Orient were lucky the rebound fell nicely for Ben Chorley to head away to safety with less than a minute to go Norwich gained a free kick twenty-five yards from goal, I cheerfully reminded those around me that Chris Martin had netted from a similar distance at a similar time at the weekend to equalise against MK Dons. However the average blood pressure in Brisbane Road plummeted when it was thankfully headed away, seconds later the final whistle sounded and the and noise generated would have taken off the roof of the west stand if it wasn’t so bloody high up.

Orient had earned a deserved victory against the table topping team through sheer effort and determination not to mention the genius of Russell Slade.

And finally after conceding 8 goals in three games against us this season Fraser Forster must hate playing the Orient and yes we already love you Mr Slade.

John Spicer set to sign for the O’s?

March 25th, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »

Heavily rumoured to be true and currently posted up on Sky Sports is that John Spicer of Doncaster Rovers is set to sign for the O’s on-loan.

Romford born Spicer was an Arsenal trainee alongside Ben Chorley before signing for Bournemouth.

He left the Cherries to join Burnley and has since made his way to Doncaster.

Could the next chapter in his book bring him to the O’s?

Aaron Doran to stay at the O’s for the season.

March 23rd, 2010 by Orientitis No comments »

Rumours circulating that the O’s are set to extend Doran’s loan from Blackburn Rovers until the end of the current season.

Whilst he don’t look a bad player, he’s clearly not what the O’s are looking for. This ’signing’ smacks of desperation and goes to show how Williams clearly doesn’t rate our serial bench-warmers or ‘clubmen’ if you prefer, Baker or Pires.

I think the message is clear. Bring back Nicky Adams.

Playing in our regulation 4-4-2 formation, George will probably go with the following:

Jones, Purches, Chorley, Tam, Daniels, Adams, Thornton, Chambers, Deme, McGleish & Jarvis.

Tehoue for Jarv on 65 minutes, Scowcroft & Smith for Scotty & Demetriou after 80 minutes.
